HCD Financial Blueprint: Community Data Analysis

Overview

As part of the Housing and Community Development (HCD) Financial Blueprint initiative, I conducted a socioeconomic analysis of selected ZIP codes within the City of Memphis to provide context for program planning and decision-making.

Question

How do demographic, economic, and housing conditions vary across the project study area and compared to the city as a whole, and what patterns emerge when these indicators are considered together?

Data Analysis

I compiled and analyzed multiple datasets describing community conditions, including:

• Population characteristics

• Household income

• Poverty indicators

• Educational attainment

• Housing characteristics

• Other socioeconomic measures requested by HCD

Data sources included the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS), Chandler Home Sales Data, and City of Memphis Service Requests data.

The analysis examined individual indicators and combined findings to develop a broader understanding of socioeconomic characteristics and trends across each ZIP code.

Geographic Context

A map of the study area was created to visualize the geographic boundaries of the analysis and support comparison of ZIP codes.

Analytical Approach

Rather than evaluating individual indicators independently, the analysis considered how multiple factors interact to provide a more complete understanding of community conditions. For example, income levels, educational attainment, housing characteristics, and service request patterns together provide additional context about neighborhood conditions.

Deliverable

A written analytical report summarizing findings and providing HCD with a data-informed foundation for Financial Blueprint planning.
